What is counter steering?

Counter-steering is a technique used by motorcycle riders and some cyclists to initiate a turn. It involves briefly steering in the opposite direction of the desired turn before making the turn in the direction the rider wants to go.

When a rider pushes on the handlebars in the opposite direction of the turn, it causes the motorcycle or bicycle to lean into the turn, allowing for smoother and more controlled movement through the corner. This technique is particularly effective at higher speeds, where leaning the bike or motorcycle is necessary to navigate curves and corners.

Counter-steering may seem counterintuitive at first, but it is a fundamental skill for experienced riders looking to improve their handling and maneuverability. It is important for riders to practice and become familiar with counter-steering to enhance their control and safety on the road.
